Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders

Strategic Plan

Vision: 

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will work to uphold the vision statement of our professional accrediting body,Making effective communication a human right accessible, and achievable for all,” by focusing its efforts on student education, research, and community service

 

Mission:

The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) strives to provide students a comprehensive education that combines theoretical knowledge with clinical application and research. We accomplish this mission through a combination of academic course work, clinical practicum, and research activities. The intent of this mission is to prepare students for graduate study and ensure their entry into the field of communication disorders as competent professionals upon completion of the graduate program. We recognize our responsibility to serve the regional community. In this regard, the department provides comprehensive speech, language, and hearing services to individuals and families in the region through a clinical atmosphere that fosters respect and support for diversity, as well as advocacy for the rights of individuals.

 

Goal 1: Enhance visibility through professional, university and community activities.

The CSD department enhances student learning by providing and maintaining the opportunity for diverse clinical experiences and good relationships with the community to create better opportunities for research, clinical externship and observation experiences.

 

Over the next five years the department commits itself to the following action steps:

 

Professional

UMD CSD will publish peer-reviewed articles in scholarly and professional journals

 

UMD CSD will engage in and support presentations by faculty and students in forums outside the department (university, professional meetings, etc)  

 

University

UMD CSD will participate in university wide events.

 

Community

UMD CSD will conduct public relations activities outside of campus and act as a continuing education resource for local professionals.

 

Goal 2:  Maintain and Expand Current Sources of Funding for the Department

The department is aware of the new financial challenges that face university programs in this first quarter of the 21st century.  As such, we are cognizant of the fact past approaches to keeping the department operating in a financial sense will no longer be successful.

 

Over the next five years the department commits itself to the following action steps:

 

UMD CSD, through formation of a department committee, will create and implement a sustainable process for acquiring funding (grants, awards, scholarships, donations etc)  

 

UMD CSD will collaborate with college and university development officers, as well as other departments within the college, to acquire funding (identifying sources, grant writing workshops etc)

  

Goal 3: Advocate  To Maintain the Legacy of the Program

Starting in 2015, the department is anticipating a significant turnover in academic staff due to retirements. The department needs to have a plan in place to make this transition occur as seamlessly as possible while preserving the high academic standards and reputation for which the department is known.

 

Over the next five years the department commits itself to the following action steps:

 

UMD CSD will develop and promote a system for maintaining the highest caliber faculty as the department anticipates retirements over the next five years as well as work to support existing faculty

 

UMD CSD will provide data to advocate for the ongoing distribution of recurrent funds and to promote the establishment of new permanent academic and clinical positions

 

UMD CSD will maintain the legacy of the program by working toward the expansion of the department thereby continuing and enhancing the quality education of its students
