The Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at the University of Minnesota, Duluth provided undergraduate and graduate education in speech-language pathology. Accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association since 1978, the program prepares students to work in a variety of professional settings and to meet the challenges of serving individuals with diverse communication impairments. Students choose UMD's Communication Sciences and Disorders Program because it offers the courses, the clinical experiences, and the individualized instruction needed to become a skilled speech language pathologist. Up-to-date courses reflecting current needs in the profession area available, such as courses in assistive technology, child language disorders, dysphagia, motor speech disorders, speech science instrumentation, and stuttering. Employers seek graduates from the program because they are well equipped to serve people with communication handicaps. Student have presented their research work at state, national, and international conferences.
The Edwin H. Eddy Foundation and the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program co-sponsor workshops each year, featuring prominent leaders in clinical assessment and rehabilitation. These workshops attract speech language pathologists, audiologists, and other professionals from across the nation.
The Communication Sciences and Disorders Program is dedicated to teaching students how to apply academic and research concepts to the realities of clinical practice. Through internships in the University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and affiliated internship sites, students readily accrue the varied clinical experience required to obtain the Certificate of Clinical Competence and to prepare for future employment.
UMD, a mid-size campus with a student population of nearly 9000, is one of the four coordinate campuses of the University of Minnesota system. Applicants must have a four-year undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders or speech-language pathology and/or audiology from an American university with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Undergraduate degrees in Communication Disorders from foreign universities are also accepted, as long as they are equivalent to a four-year American university baccalaureate degree in Communication Disorders. Three letters of recommendation evaluating the applicant's scholarship and clinical skills are required. At least two letters should be from academic faculty familiar with applicant. A personal statement of the applicant's short- and long-term goals is required.

At least 6 credits of approved courses from related areas are required. Students wishing to obtain Minnesota licensure as a speech language pathologist for school settings must complete a preparation program approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. These courses may be applied to this category.

Robert F. Pierce Scholarship for Academic Excellence
The top graduate student applicant will be offered a $10,000 scholarship payable in five installments over the two year graduate program. Determination of the top student will be based on the weighted score generated by the applicant's academic achievement, letters of recommendation, and personal statement used in the department's Graduate School admission process. No application process is required. The student receiving this scholarship is not eligible for the Eddy H. Eddy Scholarship.
Approximately $25,000 in scholarship support is funded annually. Applicants must meet a minimum grade point average (currently 3.0) to qualify for a scholarship. This GPA minimum is subject to change. Applications for this scholarship will be sent to you if you are accepted into the graduate program. Applications for the scholarship will be reviewed by the foundation and students will be notified in the Fall regarding thier applicaiton status.
The University of Minnesota provides scholarships for high ability non resident, non reciprocity graduate students. The scholarship is in the form of a partial tuition waiver. The department must apply for these funds on behalf of the student and the student must be a resident of the United States.
