Geographic Information Sciences Lab
The GISL is supported by student technology fees and through the GISL Internal Services Organization. The GISL is used as a teaching facility for for three courses: Geog 4563 Introduction to Geographic Information Science, Geog 5541 Environmental Applications of GIS, and 5995 GIS in Resource and Policy Management. GISL provides students access to 14 high-end workstations capable of conducting spatial analysis, managing / graphically representing large datasets and producing large-format printed output. The large data server allows easy access to statewide digital data—as well as extended storage space for students' and employees' project data.
GISL staff and its services contribute to the UMD Campus as
an educational resource and as a research facility for cartographic
and geographic information system (GIS) needs. Faculty and
students from any department are invited to use the lab free
of charge for self-paced tutorials or to access the GIS digital
data library. GIS Services performed by the lab include GIS
consulting, GIS analysis, cartography, and large format printing.
Several sponsored
and interdepartmental projects are also conducted in GISL.
These projects provide valuable experience for the student
staff working on them.
