The Alayne and Charles Berkins Scholarship

    Shannon Kinley

The Alayne and Charles Berkins Scholarship serves undergraduate Liberal Arts majors in Spanish, German Studies, and French programs in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. This scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, fees and/or other related educational expenses while attending UMD. The scholarship is awarded to students in their junior or senior year, and is based on scholastic merit and need. Students need a 3.0 GPA in their language program courses and a 2.75 GPA overall, at the time of application and during the time of their scholarship.

Shannon is from Eagan, Minnesota and is currently a sophomore at UMD. She has a double major in Spanish and Writing Studies. Shannon is very excited to be studying abroad this June in Salamanca, Spain. At UMD Shannon writes for the The Statesman, is a member and officer of the UMD Synchronized Skating Team and a proud member of the Coloring Club. She is also currently in training to be a teaching Assistant for UMD Seminar next fall.

Stephanie Imholte Hagelberg Scholar

Ms. Hagelberg was a Spanish major at UMD who graduated in 1984. The scholarship is open to students of French, German, and Spanish.

Kelly is a junior majoring in Psychology and minoring in French. She is from Stillwater, Minnesota. Kelly is currently studying abroad during Spring 2012 in Montpellier, France. On campus, she is a member of the Psychology club and a Psi Chi member.

Frances Knobloch Scholarship

The Knobloch Scholarship is given by a graduate of the department and named in honor of her high school language teacher. This teacher has also contributed to this scholarship, which is open to students of French, German, and Spanish.

Samantha is a sophomore from Stewartville, Minnesota. She is majoring in Biology with a minor in German Studies. She also plans to minor in chemistry. She will be participating in the Language and Culture in Germany study abroad program in May. It is a 3-week program that takes place in Potsdam, Germany. At UMD Samantha is involved in the Biology Club and plays intramural volleyball and basketball.

Friends of Milan Kovacovic Scholarship in French Studies

    Nicole Grimm

To provide travel scholarships for students minoring or majoring in French Studies.

Nicole is a sophomore from Rochester, Minnesota. She is majoring in Accounting and Finance and has a minor in both Business Administrations and French. She will be studying abroad in the French Riviera for four weeks this summer. She will be staying in Antibes, France and will be taking courses at Centre International d'Antibes. At UMD Nicole is involved in the Honors Program, a member of the Kirby Leadership Institute, and the treasurer for her sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma.

Marinelli Scholarship in French and Spanish

The Marinelli scholarship was begun in 1986 by Angela and Anne V. Marinelli of Hibbing, Minnesota. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in French or Spanish.

Kristina is a senior from Pine City, Minnesota. She is majoring in Anthropology and is minoring in both Communication and Spanish. Kristina will be participating in a 10 week Spanish Language and Culture program at the University of Valencia, Spain.

Derek is a junior from Duluth. His current major is organizational management and plans to add the French major next fall. Derek will be traveling with a program that is run through the University of Minnesota and will be studying in the south of France in the city of Montpellier.
