Proposed Vision for UMD in 2020 Related to this Topic

UMD integrates equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice into all aspects of campus life and
learning through an intentional, clear, caring and restorative manner. Decisions and actions are used as
opportunities to dismantle racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism and classism. In doing so we create a
more just, integrated educational community that celebrates all human difference.

Proposed Goals for UMD to Achieve in the Next Three-Five Years Related to this Topic

  1. Change the systems and structures that were created by a dominant culture which marginalizes differences.
  2. Create a positive and inclusive campus climate for all.
  3. Integrate inclusivity, accessibility, and cultural competencies into all academic and
    student life curricula.

Proposed Action Steps for UMD to Achieve in the Next One-Two Years Related to this Topic

Goal #1: Change the systems and structures that were created by a dominant culture which marginalizes differences.

  1. Update and implement policies and procedures that will enforce our philosophy of social justice.
  2. Enforce current policies of zero harassment and discrimination and update/develop strong policies relating to reporting and investigating racial incidents.
  3. Recruit and enroll a diverse student body that reflects the state-wide racial composition, and provide the necessary resources to retain those students.
  4. Recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff, administration, and cabinet.

Goal #2: Create a positive and inclusive campus climate for all.

  1. Update and implement policies and procedures that will enforce our philosophy of social justice.
  2. Integrate inclusivity, accessibility and cultural competencies into comprehensive orientation programs for all faculty, staff and students and provide on-going training and discussions about differences, UMD culture, values, and our mission that include all
  3. Conduct a survey and assessment of campus climate every four years, make the results known, and then integrate the results into academic and student life programming.
  4. Develop curriculum that is guided by the principles of equity and social justice.
  5. Enforce current policies of zero harassment and discrimination and update/develop strong policies relating to reporting and investigating racial incidents.

Goal #3: Integrate inclusivity, accessibility, and cultural competencies into all academic and student life curricula.

  1. Update and implement policies and procedures that will enforce our philosophy of social justice.
  2. Develop curriculum that is guided by the principles of equity and social justice.
  3. Assess efforts to integrate equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice into all aspects of campus life and learning.
  4. Enforce current policies of zero harassment and discrimination and update/develop strong policies relating to reporting and investigating racial incidents.
