Graduate Program Council

October 30, 2012

Present Julie Ernst, Bob Lloyd, Mike Raschick, Diane Raushenfels, Fay Maas (ex offcio)

Requested minor changes to Psychology Grad program proposal were approved via email.

In response to the suggested revisions to PSY 5021,  Fay proposed the following revisions to all 5xxx proposals:

#23 - What programs including your own will be affected by the proposed new course or course change?

This course will be part of the proposed graduate program. The content of the course is specific to graduate study in psychology and thus will not impact other programs.  Adding this class will not significantly impact the undergraduate Psychology program.  Sufficient sections of undergraduate courses will exist and upper division undergrads will be able to enroll in this course.

#24 - Describe financial and staffing implications.

The course will be assigned into existing faculty workload though the course scheduling modifications described in the program proposal.

The group agreed to these suggested changes, but Julie noted that in some cases the grad course was being substituted for a lower division undergrad course. She wanted this to be clearly identified in #23.

OVERALL ISSUES: applies across proposals being reviewed.

  • #1&2 Improve the consistency in titles: Using the term Advanced in 5xxx courses not consistent. Examine whether the use of Advanced applies only to courses that have an undergraduate counterpart
  • #5 Look at catalog descriptions for model: make descriptions more consistent across proposals for program continuity
  • #23 This course will be part of the proposed graduate program. The content of the course is specific to graduate study in psychology and thus will not impact other programs.  Adding this class will not significantly impact the undergraduate Psychology program.  Sufficient sections of undergraduate courses will exist and upper division undergrads will be able to enroll in this course.
  • #24 The course will be assigned into existing faculty workload though the course scheduling modifications described in the program proposal.
  • #25 Improve consistency in conceptual outlines. Suggest creating brief outlines so that concepts and outcomes are readily identifiable.

PSY 5052

  • #1&2: Does the term Advanced need to be used here?
  • #5: Compare catalog copy to style used in the catalog. Revise to be more consistent with catalog style.
  • #16: Clarify. It appears that undergraduates can take this course in place of 3020. True?
  • #23: Clarify whether one section of 3020 will be dropped. If #23 is not changing, no need to respond to this question.
  • #26c and d: delete qualifiers competently and correctly

Approve with minor changes: Make revisions and email to Fay. Fay will give final approve after reviewing changes.

PSY 5120

  • #1 Title doesn’t convey career counseling; not reflective of course description. Suggest adding counseling to the title
  • Catalog number: 5120 or 8520? The latter is on the grid submitted to GPC
  • #23: see above
  • #24: see above
  • #25: see above
  • #26: use measureable terms see the following for examples http://www.d.umn.edu/cehsp/administrative/aa_council/obj_asses_outline.html

Approve with minor changes: Make revisions and email to Fay. Fay will give final approve after reviewing changes.

PSY 5121

  • #1&2: Does the term Advanced need to be used here?  Undergrad course is Abnormal not Psychopathology. So if no undergrad Psychopathology does it need to be Advanced?
  • #23: Clarify whether 3121 is a prereq or whether students can substitute 5121 for 3121. Make this consistent with #16.  Remove reference to SW as discussed in 10.23.12 GPC meeting.  Incorporate recommended language for #23 above.
  • #24 see above
  • #26A Divide Outcome A into two.  Describe clinical research methods for investigating etiology should stand separately.

Approve with minor changes: Make revisions and email to Fay. Fay will give final approve after reviewing changes.

PSY 5201

  • #1&2 Is Advanced being used appropriately for this title? see above
  • #23: see above. Clarify if 5201 can replace 3201 for undergraduates or is 3201 a prerequisite?  Make this also clear in #16.
  • #24: see above
  • #26:  Learning outcomes do not align with conceptual outline. Too vague. Use measureable terms. See: http://www.d.umn.edu/cehsp/administrative/aa_council/obj_asses_outline.html

Approval deferred: revise and resubmit to committee for review.
