Changes to Psychology Major

Bob gave background to the proposed changes in psychology. A program review team last year suggested that the major was too large; also had some observations about the nature of the curriculum, including course duplication. Faculty study resulted in the proposed changes. In addition to the reduction in credits, the core of the program is more prescriptive (fewer options). The proposed curriculum is as follows:

Degree Requirements

Requirements for the B.A.S. (120 cr) in psychology include:

• Liberal education requirements. Biol 1001—Biology and Society (4) or Biol 1011—General Biology I (5) must be used to fulfill Category 4.

• Advanced writing requirement: Comp 3140—Advanced Writing: Human Services or Comp 3160—Advanced Writing: Social Sciences (3)  Students are strongly encouraged to take Advanced Writing before taking PSY 3021.

• Major requirements (48 cr):

Lower and upper division core (34-36 credits), electives in Psy 2xxx or higher (12-14 credits), 20 credits of Psy 3xxx or higher applied to the B.A.S. must be taken in residence at UMD

• A minor program of the student’s choice or 18 additional upper division credits outside the major

The changes include a new course proposal: Psy 2003, Psychology as a Discipline and Profession, 1 credit.. Discussion on outcomes and assessment methods. Some suggested language was sent back to the department,

Changes to the program, including the new course proposal, were approved with minor revisions to the course outcomes and objectives as discussed.

The Council had a discussion about the scheduled meeting of this curriculum group with the Board of Teaching review team on campus November 13-14.
