Academic Affairs Committee

October 5, 2001

Present: Ken Gilbertson, Dennis Falk (substituting for Melanie Shepard); Faith Loven, Bob Lloyd, Dan Gilsczinski, Jackie Millslagle, Lynn Velander.

Motion and second to elect Bob Lloyd as Chair; carried.

Jackie Millslagle will take minutes for fall semester.

Fall semester meetings are scheduled for 8:45-9:45 a.m., Fridays, on these dates: October 19, November 2, 16, 30; December 14. Curriculum materials must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. Friday the week prior to a meeting and will be circulated to committee members. If there are no agenda items, meetings will be cancelled.

There was discussion about the formation of the new Graduate Program Council (GPC) and how much graduate curriculum work will need to flow through that group. It was determined that all curriculum proposals, both undergraduate and graduate, will come through Academic Affairs; however, if the GPC will take an active roll in curriculum at the graduate level, then graduate proposals may only need to come to Academic Affairs as information items. The question was also raised as to why more of our graduate courses are not taken to the Graduate School Council, thus making our courses available to Graduate School students to use in programs. More detailed guidelines will be established after the GPC begins meeting.

Following questions, new course Proposals CC# 1, 2, 3, and 4 from Education were tabled until questions are answered by the department..

CC# 5, a minor modification to HPER 3200, was also tabled pending background information on the proposal.

Jackie will send a reminder to all CEHSP faculty that the Committee needs sufficient background information on proposals in order to make decisions. Authors should attach a brief abstract of the history leading up to the proposal, or make sure this information is in the ADDITIONAL RATIONALE OR SUPPORTING INFORMATION item in the course proposal. In addition, authors should make sure department representatives understand the proposals and can answer questions from the committee. Where appropriate, a single abstract will suffice for a group of proposals.

Meet adjourned at 10:00 a.m.

Jackie Millslagle, Recorder
