Center for Environmental Education

“Fostering environmental sustainability through outdoor and environmental education.”

General Admissions Requirements:

Application Information:

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. All materials are submitted electronically through the ApplyYourself Application System, administered by the University of Minnesota's Graduate School.

Application Deadline

Applications are due February 1, with admission for the following fall semester. (Under extenuating circumstances, applications may be considered past the deadline for admission.)

Application Fee

The application fee for U.S. applicants and permanent residents is $75, and $95 for international applicants. The application fee for a Change of Status or Readmission application is $75. You must pay the application fee with a valid credit/debit/check card. This fee is subject to change. The most detailed and up-to-date information about the fee is included in the instructions that accompany the online application for admission. Please note the application fee cannot be waived or deferred and is not refundable.

Application Process and Materials:

All application materials should be submitted directly into the ApplyYourself Application System. Your application will not be reviewed until all of the required materials are submitted successfully. Incomplete applications cannot be considered for admission. Please note that because this ApplyYourself platform is used across the UM campuses by a diversity of graduate programs, the ApplyYourself system has sections that may be required by other programs, but not required for our MEEd application. Thus, please use the instructions below to guide you in knowing which application sections to complete and which sections will remain blank. For example, some programs require an applicant statement on diversity, but our program does not. Thus, there will be some sections that would allow for uploading a document, but for our program, you leave it blank. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us (

Required materials include the following:

Admission Decisions

Admission decisions are communicated to applicants using the ApplyYourself application system. A decision for admission notice will be emailed to you once your application is carefully reviewed by the department’s admission committee and your transcripts and any credentials (test reports, diploma copies, etc.) are authenticated by Graduate School officials. The email will ask you to log into your application to view your admission decision. Admission decisions are generally determined by late March.

Admitted applicants may request a deferral of their admission to graduate study for up to one year without reapplying. If the deferral is approved and the student does not start within the one year period, the applicant must reapply.
