"One of my favorite parts about tutoring has been the solidifying of fundamental concepts in my major."

UMD’s Tutoring Center is an award-winning, student-helping-student program.

Data from last year's Tutoring Center surveys indicate well over half of student users (58%) and tutors (67%) experienced heightened interest in their majors as a result of their participation in tutoring. Over 80% of student users and student tutors report improved scholarship and increased overall satisfaction with UMD as a result of their participation in the program.

A vast majority of tutors reported they developed more empathy (87%) and a greater sense of responsibility (88%) from their tutoring experience; nearly all of them (97%) indicated they had developed skills transferable to future employment situations.

Tutoring provides an additional interactive component to students’ academic experience. Tutors are trained academic coaches; they explain concepts and model techniques that support formal instruction with the goal of improving students’ grasp of the subject matter.
